Low sex drive after 40 is common and usually has more than one cause. Medical factors such as medications, health conditions, pain and hormone shifts belong with your doctor. Alongside that care, four everyday levers can help: better sleep, regular exercise, lower chronic stress and steady nutrition. They won't fix everything, but they often help women feel more like themselves.
Let's talk about this like grown women. Clients in Carlsbad bring it up quietly, usually at the end of a session, almost apologizing. No apology needed. Desire is part of health and part of feeling like yourself.
To be clear about my lane: I'm a nutrition and strength coach, not a doctor or a sex therapist. I don't diagnose or treat anything. What I can do is help with the daily habits that affect energy, mood and how you feel in your body, and help you prepare for a good conversation with your doctor.
Is low sex drive after 40 normal?
It's common, and it's not a character flaw. Cleveland Clinic notes that low libido affects up to one in five men, and even more women, at some point in life. Common doesn't mean you have to accept it, though. If it bothers you or strains your relationship, it's worth addressing.
That's from Cleveland Clinic's overview of low libido. Desire also naturally varies between people and across seasons of life. The question isn't whether you match some average. It's whether you're happy with where you are.
What causes low sex drive in women after 40?
Usually a mix. Mayo Clinic lists physical causes such as diabetes, high blood pressure and pain during sex; medications, including some antidepressants; lifestyle factors like alcohol, smoking and fatigue; psychological factors like stress, anxiety, depression and body image; relationship issues; and hormone shifts. Several often overlap at once.
You can read the full list on Mayo Clinic's page on low sex drive in women. Because so many causes are medical, your doctor is the right first stop. Bring a list of your medications, any changes in your cycle or sleep, and whether sex has become uncomfortable. My doctor conversation checklist can help you prepare.
Then look at the four levers below. They're the ones a coach can actually help you move.
Can better sleep improve sex drive?
It may. In a two-week study of 171 women, longer sleep on a given night was linked with more desire the next day, and each extra hour of sleep raised the odds of partnered sexual activity by 14%. The women were college-age, so it doesn't prove the same for women over 40, but it fits what I see.
That study was published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine (Kalmbach et al., 2015). It makes sense. When you're running on five hours, desire is usually the first thing to go and the last thing on your mind. Protecting sleep is one of the first things I work on with clients. My practical plan is in Sleep After 40: Six Evidence-Based Shifts.
Does exercise help libido in women?
Research suggests it can. A 2018 review found that short bouts of exercise may increase physical arousal, and that regular exercise may support sexual satisfaction indirectly through heart health, mood and body image. Strength training is my favorite lever here, because feeling strong changes how you carry yourself.
That review is Stanton, Handy and Meston, Sexual Medicine Reviews, 2018. The authors noted that long-term clinical trials are limited, so treat exercise as support, not a cure. For a starting plan, read Strength Training After 40 for Women in North County San Diego. Feeling strong often shows up in how you carry yourself long before anything changes in the mirror.
How does stress affect sex drive?
Chronic stress pulls your attention out of your body. In a small study, women with high chronic stress showed lower physical arousal than women with average stress, and distraction was the strongest predictor of that difference. It's hard to feel present when your mind is running tomorrow's to-do list.
That study (Hamilton and Meston, Journal of Sexual Medicine, 2013) included just 30 women, so it's a clue, not a verdict. Still, it matches real life. Here's what I coach:
A transition ritual. Ten minutes between work mode and home mode: a walk, a shower, music, breathing.
Fewer open loops. Write tomorrow's list down before dinner so your brain can let go of it.
Boundaries on your evening. Phones out of the bedroom. Email has a closing time.
Calm-down skills. Slow breathing and short walks help settle a nervous system that's been on high alert all day.
Can nutrition affect libido?
Indirectly, yes. I don't put much stock in "aphrodisiac food" lists, but under-eating, blood sugar swings and heavy drinking can drain the energy and mood that desire depends on. Cleveland Clinic suggests regular exercise, eating well and cutting back on alcohol. Steady meals with enough protein are a good place to start.
What this looks like with my clients:
Eat enough. Chronic under-eating leaves you tired and flat. Many women over 40 are under-fueling without realizing it.
Build steady meals. Protein, fiber-rich carbs and healthy fats keep energy even. See Hormone-Aware Nutrition for Women Over 40.
Rethink the evening wine. It may feel relaxing, but alcohol can disrupt sleep and dull arousal.
Skip the miracle supplement. If a product promises to restore desire, talk to your doctor before you spend money on it.
When should I see a doctor about low sex drive?
See a doctor if low desire bothers you or your relationship, if it started after a new medication, or if sex has become painful. Mayo Clinic notes the cause can be as simple as a medication change. Your doctor can check health conditions, medications and hormones, and refer you to a gynecologist or sex therapist.
Don't wait for it to become a crisis. Persistent low desire that causes distress can be a treatable condition, and you don't need to meet a formal diagnosis to ask for help. Coaching works best alongside that care, never instead of it.

FAQ
Can a nutrition coach fix low libido?
No coach can promise that. A coach can help with sleep, exercise, stress and nutrition habits that support energy, mood and body confidence. Medical causes need your doctor, and relationship or emotional factors may call for a therapist.
Do supplements increase sex drive in women?
Be cautious. Many products make big promises with little evidence, and some can interact with medications. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before trying any supplement for libido.
Can hormone shifts after 40 lower sex drive?
Yes, hormone shifts can affect desire, comfort and sleep. Your doctor can talk with you about what's happening and what treatment options may fit, including whether hormone therapy is appropriate for you.
Is it awkward to bring this up with a coach?
It shouldn't be. Desire is connected to sleep, stress, energy and how you feel in your body, which are all things good coaching addresses. You share only what you're comfortable sharing.
